Common questions

Partner Visa FAQs

No. Partner visas cover both married and de facto relationships. De facto couples generally need to show they have been in the relationship for at least 12 months, unless an exception applies (such as registering the relationship).
If you apply onshore (820), you are usually granted a bridging visa with full work rights while your application is decided. Offshore applicants travel to Australia once the provisional visa (309) is granted.
The Department looks at four pillars: the financial aspects of your relationship, the nature of your household, the social recognition of your relationship, and your mutual commitment. We help you gather and present this clearly.
You typically hold the temporary or provisional visa (820 or 309) for around two years before the permanent stage (801 or 100) is decided, provided the relationship is ongoing. Timeframes are indicative and change.
You must tell the Department. In limited circumstances — for example where there has been family violence, a shared child, or the death of your partner — you may still be granted the permanent visa. Seek advice immediately.
